Presents : Washoe County Golf Course

  •  It was the year United States entered WW1
  • It was the birth of the Reno area’s most historic Golf Course & the first course in Reno.

History – Washoe County Golf Course was founded by Mrs. Gourtley Dunn Webb after she came to the area only to not find a golf course in the area. At the time she was the only Professional Woman Golfer and was a famed teacher and player. Coming from a long line of English golf players her first teaching was done at the Princess Golf Club in London.

In March of 1917 there were 60 property owners living on Washoe Golf Course and the community/property and course were all well on their way to becoming one of the finest courses in America. The most upstanding people in the community all got involved in the building and designing of the course. Eighty acres of Moana Springs was purchased and Reno’s first golf course was on its way to being constructed. The couse opened up as members only club. With the club house being the center of attention, the course was a hit for some great society events as well as a gathering spot for the Reno’s High Society and Elite.

Shortly after the Depression the course was opened to the public hosting its First PGA tournament in 1946 and Ben Hogan being among its champions. The course was nicknamed “ The Shoe” and has blossomed and changed ever so much over time. The course now measures 6,695 yards and has a par of 72. Today it’s still selected as one of the most beautiful courses in the Truckee Meadows.

The course is now the preferred venue for all sizes of tournaments, parties and events. There are full size practice facilities with generous putting greens, driving range, chipping areas and practice bunkers. “It is a perfect Family course and way to give back to families who want to play golf” says Jeffrey Lowden, President of Sky West Services and a past Professional Golfer.

Add a newly remodeled Pro Shop, an indoor grill , outdoor barbecue facilities and event seating area, as well as a family environment for all to enjoy ; it’s no wonder Washoe County Golf Course is a favorite among locals and visitors.

In 2010 the course Head Golf Pro Darin Menante was named to the list of Play Golf America’s Top 100 Performers. This is the first time the list was established and the PGA called it a very distinguished list. The course offers a series of Play Golf America Programs such as Play Golf America Day, Daughters Day, and Patriots Day.

Washoe County Golf Course is so rich in history we highly recommend everyone play it at least once. Stop in the club house and say hi to Barney Bell, Darin Menante, or Jared Becher and let them know Jeffrey Lowden and Kristian Walters with Sky West Services sent you.

Sky West started in 1987 in Phoenix, AZ when I was a grunt at Scott Jackson Brokerage. As the brokerage company focused in Industrial Real Estate I walked the industrial parks, going door to door looking for listings, in August when it was 115 degrees out. Of course all I could afford were the cheap wool suits but it was a start. I decided to go to Graduate School and get a better education in Real Estate.

I was lucky to land in a great real estate graduate program (One of the best in the country Univ. of Denver) and did learn the real estate business.

However, I did not really get to put my books to real world experience until 1993 when I joined Lands of Sierra, the commercial real estate development company for Northern Nevada’s Power Company, NV Energy, formerly Sierra Pacific Power Co.

As the financial analyst for the President and controller I  learned that it was not a large team that was able to build a $500M company, only about 7 people. We built the first Home Depot in RENO, along with other commercial projects that helped me understand and really learn the commercial development business.

We built office buildings, retail shopping centers, residential and commercial pads, Build to suit corporate stores as well as residential horizontal development to sell high-end residential lots.

In 1996 I was asked to join family in Los Angeles. Commercial real estate was half of what we did. We sold, bought, invested, managed and developed multiple 150 unit Apartments projects, Commercial shopping centers, office buildings, single use commercial buildings from Phoenix to Seattle, Boise to Las Vegas and throughout Nevada and California.

After more than 20 years Sky West has grown to manage many assets and build a number of sister companies in Nevada and California. We are growing. The organizational chart below is the plan that we are currently executing .
